Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Withania somnifera is an evergreen shrub native to Asia and Africa and widely known as ashwagandha or Indian ginseng. It has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for stress relief and general wellness. The plant contains several bioactive compounds—most notably withanolides (steroidal lactones), alkaloids and saponins—which are thought to contribute to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Withania somnifera is commonly marketed as a dietary supplement for stress reduction (adaptogen), anxiety relief, sleep improvement (the species name "somnifera" means sleep-inducing), male infertility support and athletic performance enhancement. Mechanistically it is believed to modulate immune function and reduce inflammation through its phytochemicals; however robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited[2][3][4][8]. It is not approved by regulatory agencies for any specific medical indication.
