Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Withania somnifera extract** is a botanical extract derived from the root or leaves of Withania somnifera, commonly known as ashwagandha, an adaptogenic plant in Ayurvedic medicine. It is rich in steroidal lactones (withanolides such as withaferin A, withanolide A, withanone) and withanosides. The extract is believed to exert its effects by modulating neurotransmitter activity (including gamma-aminobutyric acid and serotonin), inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity, reducing markers of inflammation, modulating immune responses (altering Th1/Th2 cytokine ratios, increasing CD4+ expression), increasing antioxidant enzyme production, and potentially exerting antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects on cancer cell lines. It has been studied for indications including stress, anxiety, sleep improvement, cognitive function, muscle strength, immunomodulation, and as adjunctive therapy in psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative conditions. Research is ongoing and most uses are supported by preliminary or animal/human trial evidence[1][3][4][5][6].
