Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Withania somnifera root extract, commonly known as Ashwagandha, is a botanical extract being investigated for its therapeutic benefits in sensitive skin and stress-induced skin aging. It acts by targeting CCN1 (Cysteine-rich protein 61), a matricellular signaling protein involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and inflammatory activation. The extract suppresses CCN1 expression, restores integrin homeostasis, and reduces proinflammatory cytokines. Additionally, it enhances the expression of collagen-1 (COL-1) and TGF-β1, while reducing advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). In clinical evaluations, topical application has shown improvements in skin hydration, firmness, elasticity, and a reduction in fine wrinkles.
