Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Withania somnifera root powder, commonly known as Ashwagandha or Indian Ginseng, is a botanical medicinal product derived from the roots of the *Withania somnifera* plant. It contains a complex mixture of active constituents, primarily withanolides (such as withaferin A and withanone) and flavonoids, which possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. In clinical research, such as trials sponsored by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, it has been investigated as an adjuvant therapy for Parkinson's disease, where it is thought to protect dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and mitigate oxidative stress. Beyond its potential role in neurodegenerative disorders, it is widely utilized for its adaptogenic effects in managing stress, anxiety, and various inflammatory conditions.
