Drug intelligence / Profile preview
WO3191 is an investigational medical device developed by Dr. August Wolff GmbH & Co. KG, formulated as a vaginal suppository (pessary) containing an amphoteric tenside. It is designed for the post-treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) to prevent disease recurrence. The primary mechanism of action involves the disruption of adherent bacterial biofilms on the vaginal mucosa, which are typically composed of anaerobic bacteria such as *Gardnerella vaginalis* and *Atopobium vaginae*. These biofilms are encased in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that can protect bacteria from standard antibiotic therapies like metronidazole. By acting as a surfactant, WO3191 destabilizes the biofilm structure, facilitating the clearance of pathogenic bacteria and potentially restoring a healthy vaginal microbiome dominated by Lactobacilli.
