Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wong To Yick Wood Lock Medicated Balm (also known as Wong To Yick Wood Lock Medicated Oil or 黃道益活絡油) is a traditional Chinese medicated oil formulated for external use to temporarily relieve minor aches, pains, and swelling associated with muscle soreness, joint pain, sprains, bruises, backache, and rheumatism. Developed by Wong To Yick, the formulation contains active ingredients including methyl salicylate, menthol, camphor, and turpentine oil, along with other traditional Chinese herbal extracts. It exerts its therapeutic effects through a combination of counterirritation, vasodilation, and anti-inflammatory actions. Specifically, methyl salicylate acts as a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis, while menthol and camphor stimulate cold- and heat-sensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) channels (such as TRPM8, TRPV1, and TRPV3) to induce cooling and warming sensations that modulate pain signaling.
