Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a perennial herb traditionally used for digestive disorders and recently investigated for its immunomodulatory properties in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In clinical trials for Crohn's disease, wormwood has demonstrated a significant steroid-sparing effect, allowing patients to taper off corticosteroids while maintaining or achieving clinical remission. Its mechanism of action is thought to involve the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and it has also been observed to improve mood and quality of life in patients, potentially through its effects on the gut-brain axis.
