Woundcom is a Class III medical device (EU MDR 2017/745) developed by the Swedish biotechnology company Colzyx for the treatment of hard-to-heal and chronic wounds, including venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and surgical wounds. The device consists of a biological wound healing matrix composed of a bovine collagen scaffold enriched with two synthetic antimicrobial peptides. These peptides are exact replicas of sequences from the human collagen type VI alpha-3 chain. The collagen scaffold provides a structural environment that mimics the dermis, supporting cell migration and platelet aggregation while modulating matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The integrated peptides offer a dual-action therapeutic approach: one peptide stimulates fibroblast proliferation to enhance tissue regeneration, while both peptides provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains.
