Overview

WoundStat is a topical hemostatic agent composed of granular smectite, a mineral-based compound. Developed by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University and manufactured by TraumaCure Inc., it is classified as a medical device rather than a pharmaceutical drug. The mechanism of action involves the rapid absorption of water from blood to form a malleable clay-like material with high tissue adhesiveness, while the anionic surface of the smectite granules activates the intrinsic coagulation pathway to accelerate clot formation. It was primarily indicated for the temporary control of severe external hemorrhage in traumatic or battlefield settings, particularly where tourniquets are impractical. However, its use was suspended by the U.S. military in 2008 following reports of potential vascular injury and thrombosis.
