Overview

WP1096 is a preclinical-stage small molecule antiviral candidate developed by Moleculin Biotech. It is part of the company's WP1122 portfolio, which consists of novel esters of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) designed to act as prodrugs that inhibit glycolysis. By targeting the metabolic pathways that viruses exploit for replication, WP1096 has demonstrated broad-spectrum in vitro activity against several infectious agents, including SARS-CoV-2, HIV, Zika, and Dengue Fever. The compound was selected by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NIH, for evaluation in animal studies to assess its efficacy against arenaviruses, specifically using the Tacaribe Arenavirus as a model for hemorrhagic fever viruses.
