WPP-201 Bacteriophage is a bacteriophage therapy that was developed for treating venous leg ulcers. It consists of a cocktail of 8 lytic phages targeting specific bacterial pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. The therapy underwent a Phase I clinical trial to evaluate its safety and efficacy for treating venous leg ulcers (NCT00663091). According to the clinical trial results, no adverse events were attributed to the phages targeting P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and E. coli. The study included 18 test subjects and 21 controls, with healing percentages of 60% and 77%, respectively. While the Phase I trial demonstrated safety, there is no indication from the search results that the therapy progressed to Phase II trials or received regulatory approval. Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and kill bacteria. WPP-201 works by targeting specific bacterial pathogens that commonly infect venous leg ulcers. The therapy exploits the natural predatory relationship between bacteriophages and bacteria, offering a potential alternative approach for treating infections, particularly those caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The advantage of bacteriophage therapy is its specificity - phages typically only attack specific bacterial species or strains, leaving beneficial bacteria and human cells unharmed. This targeted approach could potentially reduce side effects compared to broad-spectrum antibiotics.
