Overview

WRR‑99 is an experimental small molecule inhibitor designed to target the cysteine protease cruzipain, also known as cruzain, which is a key enzyme in the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the life cycle and pathogenicity of T. cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Structural studies have shown that WRR‑99 binds covalently to cruzipain, acting as a hydrolase inhibitor and potentially blocking parasite development[2][3][8]. The compound has been studied primarily for its potential application in antiparasitic drug design.
