WS016 is a novel, highly selective, non-absorbed cation-exchange polymer binder developed for the treatment of hyperkalemia. It acts as a potassium binder and is designed to reduce serum potassium levels by binding potassium ions in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby facilitating their excretion. Unlike some other binders, it has potential advantages such as minimal risk of edema and hypomagnesemia. Clinical trials have demonstrated that WS016 can rapidly lower potassium levels within 48 hours and help maintain normokalemia during a 12-day maintenance phase. The drug is being developed by Waterstone Pharmaceuticals (Wuhan) and has reached Phase 3 clinical development for hyperkalemia[1][2][3][4][5].
