Overview
WSK-S02 (also known as Compound 398) is an orally administered small molecule inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro, also known as 3C-like protease or 3CLpro), developed by WestVac Biopharma. By targeting 3CLpro, an essential enzyme for viral replication that cleaves the viral polyproteins pp1a and pp1ab, WSK-S02 prevents the formation of functional non-structural proteins required for viral replication and assembly. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that WSK-S02 exhibits potent antiviral activity against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants (including Omicron BA.2 and BA.5) as well as other coronaviruses like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-1, with superior in vitro potency compared to nirmatrelvir. WSK-S02 is currently in late-stage development for the treatment of COVID-19 infection.
