WT-3860 is a small molecule inhibitor of Monocarboxylate Transporter 4 (MCT4) being developed by WARF Therapeutics (Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation) for the treatment of oncology. MCT4 is a membrane protein that facilitates the efflux of lactate from glycolytic cells, a process essential for maintaining intracellular pH and metabolic homeostasis in highly glycolytic cancer cells. High expression of MCT4 is often associated with poor prognosis and the maintenance of an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. By inhibiting MCT4, WT-3860 aims to disrupt lactate transport, leading to intracellular lactic acidosis and metabolic exhaustion in tumor cells, thereby inhibiting tumor growth and potentially enhancing the efficacy of concurrent immunotherapies. The program is currently in preclinical development (Stage 4).
