Overview

WT-4 is an investigational small molecule antagonist of the P2X purinoceptor 3 (P2X3), developed by Hangzhou Westan Pharmaceutical Technology for the treatment of respiratory conditions, including asthma and chronic cough. P2X3 receptors are ATP-gated ion channels located on peripheral sensory neurons, such as the vagal C-fibers that innervate the airways. Overactivation of these receptors is associated with neuronal hypersensitivity, which contributes to airway hyperresponsiveness and the persistent urge to cough seen in patients with asthma and refractory chronic cough. By selectively blocking P2X3 receptors, WT-4 aims to reduce this hypersensitivity and provide symptomatic relief. The drug is designed for oral administration and is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile.
