This investigational chemo-immunotherapy regimen is being developed by the University Hospital, Antwerp (UZA) for the first-line treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. The therapy combines standard-of-care chemotherapy (cisplatin and pemetrexed) with an autologous dendritic cell vaccine. The vaccine component consists of the patient's own dendritic cells that have been electroporated with messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the Wilms' Tumor 1 (WT1) antigen, a protein highly expressed in mesothelioma cells. This approach aims to leverage the debulking and potentially immunogenic effects of chemotherapy while simultaneously priming the immune system to recognize and attack WT1-expressing tumor cells. The dendritic cell product is generated at the Center for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (CCRG) at Antwerp University Hospital and is currently being evaluated in the Phase I/II MESODEC trial.
