Overview

WTYX10002 (also known as VZV-7D or v7D) is a novel live-attenuated varicella vaccine being developed by Sino-Innovax Biotech (a subsidiary of Wantai BioPharm) in collaboration with Xiamen University. Unlike traditional varicella vaccines that utilize the Oka strain (vOka), WTYX10002 is constructed using reverse genetics to delete the ORF7 gene, which is essential for skin and neural tropism. This genetic modification prevents the vaccine strain from causing skin lesions (varicella-like rash) or establishing latent infection in the dorsal root ganglia, thereby eliminating the risk of vaccine-induced varicella and subsequent reactivation as herpes zoster (shingles). WTYX10002 is currently in Phase III clinical development for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox) caused by varicella-zoster virus infection in children.
