Overview

Wubi Shanyao Wan is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the Tang dynasty and later included in the "Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang." It consists of 12 herbal ingredients including Dioscoreae (Shan Yao), Cistanches (Rou Cong Rong), Schisandrae (Wu Wei Zi), Cuscutae (Tu Si Zi), Eucommiae (Du Zhong), Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu Xi), Alismatis (Ze Xie), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata/Sheng Di Huang, Corni Fructus/Shan Zhu Yu, Poria Pararadicis/Fu Shen or Poria/ Fu Ling, Morindae Officinalis/Ba Ji Tian, and Halloysitum Rubrum/Chi Shi Zhi. The formula is designed to invigorate the spleen and kidney—addressing TCM patterns of spleen-kidney deficiency—and is used for symptoms such as poor appetite with muscle wasting, weakness or soreness of waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus. Modern clinical use includes nephrotic syndrome and urethral syndrome. Pharmacological studies suggest it may regulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and promote testicular cell proliferation while inhibiting apoptosis[1][2][5][6][8].
