Overview

Wuling mycelia is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from the submerged fermentation of mycelial extracts of the fungus *Xylaria nigripes* (also known as wulingshen). [3, 4] It is investigated as a potential adjunct therapy for refractory epilepsy. [3] Preclinical studies in rats suggest its mechanism of action involves the downregulation of inflammatory factors such as nuclear factor kappa-B p65 subunit (NF-ĸB/p65), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), thereby affecting the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway. [3] When used in combination with valproic acid in a rat model, Wuling mycelia was shown to reduce seizure frequency and protect against cognitive impairment. [3] It is also traditionally used for insomnia and to support neurological health. [4]
