Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wulingshen (Xylaria nigripes) is a medicinal fungus used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily developed and marketed by Zhejiang Jolly Pharmaceutical as Wuling Capsule (乌灵胶囊). It is produced through the fermentation of the mycelia of Xylaria nigripes. The drug is indicated for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety, and depression, and is being investigated for conditions such as post-stroke fatigue and comorbid depression in patients with epilepsy. Its mechanism of action is primarily linked to the modulation of the GABAergic and glutamatergic systems; it has been shown to increase the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the activity of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) while reducing glutamate levels in the brain, thereby exerting sedative and anxiolytic effects.
