Overview

Wumeiwan (WMW) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula first documented in the 'Treatise on Cold Pathogenic and Miscellaneous Diseases' (Shanghan Lun) by Zhang Zhong-jing during the Han Dynasty. The formula is composed of ten botanical ingredients: Fructus Mume (smoked plum), Asarum sieboldii (wild ginger), Zingiber officinale (ginger), Aconitum carmichaelii, Zanthoxylum, Cinnamomum cassia, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, Panax ginseng, and Angelica sinensis. Traditionally used to treat "Jueyin" stage disorders and intestinal parasitic infestations, modern research has explored its efficacy in chronic inflammatory and metabolic conditions. Its mechanism of action involves the regulation of inflammatory cytokines and the modulation of key signaling pathways, including MAPK, NF-κB, and STAT6, as well as the promotion of macrophage polarization. It is typically administered orally as a decoction, pill, or granule.
