Overview
Wuzhi Maotao Hongzao decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation primarily composed of *Ficus hirta* Vahl (Wuzhi Maotao) and *Ziziphus jujuba* Mill. (Hongzao or Red dates). *Ficus hirta*, commonly known as "Southern Ginseng," is traditionally utilized in Southern China to tonify the spleen, supplement qi, and resolve dampness. The decoction is being investigated as an adjuvant therapy for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The therapeutic rationale is based on TCM principles of supporting muscle function and vitality, as well as potential neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of the bioactive compounds within the herbs, such as psoralen and various polysaccharides. A clinical trial (ChiCTR2300077387) sponsored by the South China Hospital of Shenzhen University is evaluating its efficacy and safety in ALS patients.
