WXD171 is a specific strain of *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* (formerly *Lactobacillus reuteri*) utilized as a probiotic delivery vehicle for the development of oral vaccines. It was selected for its robust tolerance to the gastrointestinal environment, superior mucosal adhesion, and intrinsic antimicrobial activities. In preclinical research, WXD171 has been engineered to express *Staphylococcus aureus* antigens, most notably the iron-regulated surface determinant B (IsdB), to create a live oral vaccine candidate (WXD171-IsdB). This platform is designed to stimulate gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT), inducing mucosal immune responses characterized by increased production of secretory IgA and interleukin-17A (IL-17A). This vaccination strategy has demonstrated prophylactic potential against localized *S. aureus* infections, such as pneumonia and skin infections, as well as systemic conditions like sepsis.
