WXD171-Csa1 is a genetically engineered probiotic vaccine candidate designed for oral administration to protect against Staphylococcus aureus infections. It utilizes a specific strain of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (WXD171) as a live bacterial delivery vehicle, which has been modified using the pNZ8148 expression plasmid system to display the S. aureus Csa1 antigen on its cell surface. This live biotherapeutic approach aims to elicit both mucosal and systemic immune responses, providing a prophylactic strategy against localized infections, such as pneumonia and skin infections, as well as systemic conditions like sepsis. The vaccine leverages the natural probiotic properties of L. reuteri, including its tolerance of the gastrointestinal environment and adhesion ability, to deliver bacterial antigens directly to gut-associated lymphoid tissues.
