WXD171-IsdB is an engineered probiotic oral vaccine candidate designed to prevent Staphylococcus aureus infections. It utilizes a specific strain of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (WXD171) as a live bacterial delivery vehicle to express the S. aureus antigen IsdB (Iron-regulated surface determinant B). The vaccine is designed to survive the gastrointestinal environment and adhere to the intestinal mucosa, where it induces gut-associated lymphoid tissue responses. These responses include the production of secretory IgA (sIgA) and interleukin 17A (IL-17A), as well as the proliferation of Peyer's patch-derived lymphocytes. Preclinical studies have shown that WXD171-IsdB provides protection against localized S. aureus infections, such as pneumonia and skin infections, and improves survival in systemic infection models like sepsis.
