WXD171-MntC is a genetically engineered probiotic strain based on *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* (L. reuteri) developed as an oral vaccine candidate against *Staphylococcus aureus* infections. The strain WXD171 serves as a live delivery vehicle, modified with a plasmid-based expression system (pNZ8148-MntC) to display the *S. aureus* manganese transport protein C (MntC) on its cell surface. MntC is a highly conserved antigen involved in metal ion acquisition and is essential for *S. aureus* virulence. By utilizing the probiotic's ability to survive the gastrointestinal tract and interact with gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT), WXD171-MntC is designed to induce both mucosal and systemic immunity. This approach aims to provide protection against a range of *S. aureus*-induced conditions, including pneumonia, skin infections, and sepsis. The candidate is currently in the preclinical research stage.
