Overview

WZ-6600 is an intranasal formulation of mouse nerve growth factor (mNGF) developed by the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University for the treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). TON is a condition involving damage to the optic nerve following trauma, often leading to permanent vision loss. WZ-6600 is designed to deliver mNGF to the optic nerve and retina via the transnasal route, which bypasses the blood-brain and blood-retinal barriers through the olfactory and trigeminal nerve pathways. As a neurotrophic factor, mNGF binds to the high-affinity Tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) and the low-affinity p75NTR receptors on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), activating signaling pathways that promote cell survival, axonal regeneration, and neuroprotection. The drug is currently being evaluated in multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in China, both as a standalone therapy and as an adjunct to endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression surgery.
