Overview

A formulation consisting of **small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting the X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP)** encapsulated within **ultrasound-responsive microbubbles**. The microbubbles serve as a delivery system, enhancing the targeted release and deep tissue penetration of the siRNA upon ultrasound exposure. By silencing XIAP expression, which is often overexpressed in cancer and associated with resistance to apoptosis, this therapy aims to restore apoptotic signaling and sensitize tumor cells to cell death, particularly in oncologic applications. In preclinical models (e.g., human cervical cancer xenografts), intratumoral injection and ultrasound-triggered release of XIAP siRNA microbubbles led to enhanced XIAP gene silencing, increased caspase-3 activation, and improved antitumor efficacy. This technology is intended as a **theranostic (therapy + diagnostic)** approach, since the microbubbles also enhance tumor imaging by ultrasound[3][2][4].
