Overview
Xamoterol is a small molecule cardiac stimulant primarily used in the treatment of heart failure. It functions as a selective partial agonist of the beta-1 adrenergic receptor, exhibiting approximately 50% intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. This unique mechanism allows it to provide moderate cardiac stimulation at rest while acting as a beta-blocker during periods of increased sympathetic activity, such as exercise. Xamoterol improves myocardial contractility, ventricular relaxation, and filling. It is administered orally and was developed by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).
