A fixed combination of xanthan gum and chondroitin sulfate is used primarily as a preservative-free ophthalmic solution for the treatment of dry eye disease. Xanthan gum is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide that acts as a thickening and stabilizing agent, while chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan found in cartilage with anti-inflammatory properties. Together, they form an artificial tear substitute that lubricates the ocular surface and helps stabilize the tear film. Clinical trials have shown this combination to be effective in improving symptoms of dry eye disease by increasing tear film break-up time (TBUT) and reducing Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores[1][3][4][10]. The mechanism involves physical lubrication and protection of the ocular surface rather than direct pharmacological action on specific molecular targets.
