Overview

Xanthium, also commonly known as Cocklebur or Cang Er Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), refers to a genus of plants, primarily *Xanthium strumarium* or *Xanthium sibiricum*. It has been utilized for millennia in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, headaches, and skin disorders. Modern research indicates that Xanthium exhibits a range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-allergic effects. Its therapeutic properties are attributed to a complex mixture of active compounds such as sesquiterpenoids (e.g., xanthatin, xanthanolides), flavonoids, and phenolic acids. However, it is important to note that Xanthium, particularly in its raw or improperly prepared forms, contains toxic compounds like carboxyatractyloside (CAT), which can cause adverse effects and even be fatal in high doses. Traditional preparations often involve specific processing to reduce toxicity.
