Overview

Xanthopurpurin (XPP) is a botanical-derived small molecule anthraquinone compound, chemically known as 1,3-dihydroxyanthraquinone, currently under investigation for the treatment of IgE-mediated allergic diseases, including food allergies (peanut, cashew, and shrimp), asthma, and anaphylaxis. Developed primarily through research led by Dr. Xiu-min Li at New York Medical College, XPP exerts its therapeutic effect by potently suppressing the production of IgE in plasma cells. This suppression is mechanistically linked to the down-regulation of Cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2), a critical regulator of the cell cycle in IgE-producing cells. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that oral administration of XPP provides significant protection against allergen-induced anaphylaxis in poly-allergic mouse models, with effects persisting long after the cessation of treatment, suggesting potential for long-term disease modification without observed cytotoxicity.
