Xanthosine monophosphate (XMP), also known as 5-monophosphate-9-beta-D-ribofuranosyl xanthine or xanthylic acid, is a purine nucleotide and an intermediate in the biosynthesis of guanine nucleotides. It consists of the nucleobase xanthine attached to a ribose sugar and a single phosphate group. XMP plays a central role in the purine salvage pathway and de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides by serving as a precursor for guanosine monophosphate (GMP). It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but is used experimentally as an inhibitor of hypoxanthine-guanine-xanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGXPRT), particularly in studies involving Plasmodium falciparum. Its mechanism involves acting as an inhibitor at this enzyme target[2][3][4][6].
