Drug intelligence / Profile preview
XARACOLL (bupivacaine collagen sponge) is a surgically implantable, bioresorbable drug-device combination product developed by Innocoll for the management of acute postoperative pain. It consists of a biodegradable collagen matrix derived from bovine tendons impregnated with bupivacaine hydrochloride, a local anesthetic. The implant is placed directly into the surgical site during surgery, where the collagen matrix naturally biodegrades over several days while providing a sustained release of bupivacaine. Bupivacaine acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in local nerve tissues, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of pain impulses. XARACOLL was FDA-approved in August 2020 for use in adults following open inguinal hernia repair to provide local analgesia for up to 24 hours.
