Overview
Xaracoll is a bioresorbable, collagen-based drug delivery system impregnated with bupivacaine hydrochloride, developed by Innocoll using its proprietary CollaRx technology. The product consists of a lyophilized collagen sponge that serves as a reservoir for the local anesthetic, allowing for sustained release directly at the surgical site. It is specifically indicated for providing postsurgical local analgesia in adults following open inguinal hernia repair. By blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve fibers, bupivacaine inhibits the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing regional anesthesia and reducing postoperative pain. The collagen matrix is designed to be fully absorbed by the body over time, eliminating the need for surgical removal.
