The XBB.1.5 mRNA vaccine refers to a category of monovalent COVID-19 vaccines developed to target the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5. These vaccines, notably Moderna's Spikevax XBB.1.5 (andusomeran) and Pfizer/BioNTech's Comirnaty XBB.1.5 (raxtazinameran), utilize lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver messenger RNA encoding a pre-fusion stabilized version of the XBB.1.5 spike glycoprotein. Upon intramuscular administration, the mRNA is translated by host cells, triggering the production of the spike protein and inducing a robust adaptive immune response, including neutralizing antibodies and T-cell activation. These formulations were authorized by regulatory agencies like the FDA in Fall 2023 for the 2023-2024 vaccination season to provide updated protection against circulating Omicron lineages and subsequent variants such as JN.1.
