MagniXene is a hyperpolarized xenon-129 (129Xe) gas contrast agent developed by Xemed LLC for use in functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lungs. The gas is hyperpolarized using spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) to significantly enhance its nuclear magnetic resonance signal, allowing for high-resolution, non-invasive visualization of pulmonary ventilation, gas distribution, and alveolar-capillary gas exchange. MagniXene is primarily utilized in clinical research to assess regional lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other interstitial lung diseases, providing insights into disease progression and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions such as Targeted Lung Denervation (TLD). It is typically used in conjunction with a specialized polarizer system, such as Xemed's MagniPolarizer.
