Xenon + oxygen is a combination of the noble gas xenon and molecular oxygen, administered as an inhaled gas mixture. Xenon acts primarily as a general anesthetic and neuroprotective agent, while oxygen ensures adequate tissue oxygenation during administration. Xenon's mechanism of action includes antagonism at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, contributing to its anesthetic and neuroprotective effects. The combination is used in anesthesia (notably in Europe), for diagnostic imaging (such as lung ventilation studies with hyperpolarized xenon isotopes), and is under investigation for neuroprotection after hypoxic injury, treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and potentially Alzheimer's disease. The mixture offers rapid onset/offset of action with minimal cardiovascular side effects compared to other inhalational agents[5][7][9]. Research continues into its psychiatric applications and brain protection properties.
