Xenon-containing liposomes (Xe-ELIP) are an experimental neuroprotective therapeutic consisting of xenon gas encapsulated within echogenic liposomes. Developed by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Zymo Pharmaceuticals, the formulation is designed for intravenous administration with site-specific release triggered by localized ultrasound application. Xenon acts as a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, providing neuroprotection by preventing glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Preclinical studies have investigated its efficacy in treating ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and depression, where it has been shown to activate survival signaling pathways such as AKT/mTOR/BDNF.
