Overview

Hyperpolarized xenon Xe 129 is an inhaled diagnostic imaging agent used in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy to evaluate pulmonary function. The agent consists of the stable isotope xenon-129, which is hyperpolarized—typically via spin-exchange optical pumping—to significantly enhance its nuclear magnetic resonance signal. This technology allows for the non-invasive, three-dimensional visualization of lung ventilation and the quantification of gas exchange across the alveolar-capillary barrier. Specifically, it measures the transfer of the gas from the airspaces into the lung tissue (barrier) and subsequently into the red blood cells. At Duke University, this imaging modality is being investigated under an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to assess disease severity, functional impairment, and treatment response in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
