Overview

Xenon xe-133 is an inhaled **diagnostic radiopharmaceutical** consisting of the radioactive noble gas xenon-133, used primarily for pulmonary ventilation imaging and pulmonary function evaluation, and historically also for assessment of regional cerebral blood flow. After inhalation, the gas distributes through ventilated airspaces and diffuses rapidly across the alveolar membrane; gamma emissions from xenon-133 are then detected by nuclear medicine imaging systems to visualize regional ventilation and gas wash-in or wash-out. The agent is physiologically inert at diagnostic concentrations, has no specific biological receptor target, and functions through its radionuclide imaging properties rather than pharmacologic modulation of a molecular pathway. It is an FDA-approved radiopharmaceutical supplied as an inhalation gas formulation.
