Xeruborbactam is a synthetic small molecule, specifically a cyclic boronic acid-based beta-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) with ultra-broad spectrum activity. It inhibits both serine and metallo-beta-lactamases, including class A (KPC), class D (OXA-type), and metallo-beta-lactamases, thereby restoring the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacterales, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Xeruborbactam was developed by Qpex Biopharma as a next-generation BLI following vaborbactam to address resistance in serious bacterial infections. It has completed Phase 1 clinical trials for intravenous administration in combination with other beta-lactams and is also being evaluated as an orally bioavailable prodrug (xeruborbactam isoboxil)[1][3][4][8].
