Overview

Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Decoction is a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula developed in the 17th century. It is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting, gastric fullness, bloating after eating, poor appetite, loose stools, and symptoms of Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency with damp-cold stagnation. The formula consists of eight or nine herbs—commonly including Panax ginseng (or Codonopsis), Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu), Poria cocos (Fu Ling), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao/Zhi Gan Cao), Citrus reticulata peel (Chen Pi), Pinellia ternata rhizome (Ban Xia/Zhi Ban Xia), Aucklandia lappa root (Mu Xiang), Amomum villosum fruit (Sha Ren/Amomi Fructus)—and sometimes fresh ginger. Its main actions are to tonify Spleen and Stomach Qi while transforming dampness and promoting the movement of Qi. Modern studies suggest it may improve symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia—including postprandial fullness/bloating—and chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting[1][2][3][4][5]. Mechanistically in TCM terms it dispels phlegm/dampness; some research suggests effects on gastrointestinal motility via mitochondrial quality control pathways[7].
