Overview
Xiangbin prescription is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine. It is specifically designed to treat postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (POI) and promote the recovery of gastrointestinal motility in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer or gynecological conditions. The formula is a combination of several botanical ingredients, notably including *Aucklandiae Radix* (Muxiang) and *Arecae Semen* (Binglang). Its mechanism of action involves the stimulation of gastrointestinal smooth muscle contraction, likely through the activation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors by arecoline (a constituent of *Arecae Semen*) and the modulation of gastrointestinal hormones such as motilin and gastrin. Clinical evaluation focuses on reducing the time to first postoperative flatus and defecation.
