Overview
Xianglian herbal combination is a topical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM for the treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot). The combination typically consists of a solution and an ointment or cream formulation, primarily derived from the herbs *Coptis chinensis* (Huang Lian) and *Aucklandia lappa* (Mu Xiang). The therapeutic efficacy is largely attributed to berberine and other protoberberine alkaloids found in *Coptis chinensis*, which exhibit broad-spectrum antifungal activity by disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity and inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis. *Aucklandia lappa* provides complementary antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects through its sesquiterpene lactone constituents. This herbal regimen has been clinically evaluated in randomized controlled trials as an alternative to conventional synthetic antifungal treatments like terbinafine.
