Overview
Xianshen decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed by The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It is primarily utilized as a supportive therapy to prevent and treat radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma undergoing radiotherapy. The decoction is a multi-herb formula typically containing ingredients such as *Radix Scrophulariae* (Xuan Shen) and *Radix Pseudostellariae* (Taizi Shen), which are traditionally used to nourish 'Yin,' clear heat, and detoxify. Its therapeutic effect is attributed to its ability to modulate the inflammatory microenvironment by downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and by reducing oxidative stress in the oral mucosal tissues.
