Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xiao-Yao-San (XYS) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula composed of eight botanical ingredients: *Bupleuri radix* (Chai Hu), *Angelicae radix* (Dang Gui), *Paeoniae radix alba* (Bai Shao), *Atractylodis rhizome macrocephalae* (Bai Zhu), *Poria cocos* (Fu Ling), *Zingiberis siccatum rhizome* (Sheng Jiang), *Menthae haplocalycis* (Bo He), and *Glycyrrhizae radix* (Gan Cao). It is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat 'liver qi stagnation' and associated emotional or sleep disturbances. In clinical research led by Yu-Ching Hsu, XYS has been evaluated for its efficacy in improving sleep quality in patients with sleep-related diseases, including insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. The formula acts through a multi-target, multi-mechanism approach characteristic of botanical mixtures rather than a single molecular target, potentially modulating neurotransmitter systems and physiological pathways involved in sleep and stress response.
