Overview

Xiaochuan plaster (also known as Xiaochuan ointment or Xiaochuan Gao) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) topical formulation developed by the Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. It is a key component of the "winter disease in summer" (Dong Bing Xia Zhi) treatment protocol, specifically designed for acupoint application (acupoint sticking therapy) during the Sanfu period (the hottest days of the year). The plaster is primarily indicated for respiratory and allergic conditions, including asthma and allergic rhinitis, particularly those characterized by "lung-spleen deficiency" in TCM theory. It is composed of various herbal ingredients—traditionally including Sinapis alba, Corydalis yanhusuo, Asarum sieboldii, and Zingiber officinale—which are processed into an ointment and applied to specific acupuncture points to stimulate the meridians and modulate the immune system. Clinical studies, such as ChiCTR2300071338, have investigated improved or halved-dose versions of the plaster to evaluate efficacy, safety, and the immunological basis of its preventive effects.
