Overview

Xiaoke Pill is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound formulation used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a combination of several Chinese herbal extracts and a low dose of the second-generation sulfonylurea, glibenclamide (also known as glyburide). The drug works by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells via the glibenclamide component, while the herbal components are traditionally used to address the underlying "yin deficiency" and "internal heat" associated with diabetes in TCM theory. Clinical studies, including a large-scale multicenter trial (ChiCTR-TRC-08000074), have shown that Xiaoke Pill provides glycemic control comparable to glibenclamide monotherapy but with a significantly reduced risk of hypoglycemia. It is widely utilized in China as a cost-effective alternative to modern allopathic antidiabetic medications.
